This is a blog for the family and friends of Elder Lance Thomas Montgomery. He will be serving a two year mission in the Monrovia Liberia West Africa Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he left on April 18, 2013. While Elder Montgomery is on his mission his Mom will be posting pictures and letters as she gets them, the content will be straight from Lance (unless otherwise noted) - but spelling and punctuation will be corrected of course! Commentary and clarification may be added by his Mom as needed.

12/17/13
Man this week has been a busy one which is good. It definitely makes it go by faster. For my spiritual experience for this week was when we were teaching a man named Abraham. He is probably 21 years old if I had to  guess. Anyways we just finished teaching lesson 2 which is The Plan of Salvation and he started to ask us some questions about the church.  One of them was “how can I know?” we told him he can find out through prayer. He just brought up more and more questions which was fine, but in the end the prompting came to me that he never prayed about Joseph Smith. I testified to him that The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints was the only church one the face of this earth to hold the Priesthood power and that NO other church had it. I promised him two things, the first one was that if he never  prays to know then he will never find out, but I promised him if he does pray then his Father in Heaven will help him to understand the truth. I felt the spirit the whole time I was testifying.  It was sweet. The one scripture that I love that I have for this week is D&C 82:10. Now for my challenge, I challenge you to give me one way that you have seen the Lords hand in your live throughout the week or one spiritual experience.  I will be expecting it every Monday!!!

Man this week has been awesome. Tuesday we had a fun zone conference. We had a talent show. Our zone was going to do a skit but we decided to just sing Hymn 249 and we added two verses onto it. We blew everyone out of the water there’s no doubt about it hahahaha. One of the missionaries play a good piano piece. I wish I would have learned piano. Wednesday we had the spiritual conference that was awesome, I learned a lot. Thursday we had a service project which was great, one of the people that we were doing it for thought we wouldn’t be able to finish it but with 12 missionaries we did it. Friday we had an exchange which went well. Saturday we had a baptism and another district service project, which was painting a house. We got it done quick. My spiritual experience was yesterday in gospel principles class. I had the privilege of teaching it. The topics were the second coming and the millennium. The part when I felt the spirit the most was when a man asked the question that if us missionaries had the faith that the gospel would be spread to every corner of this earth before Jesus Christ came. I looked him straight in the eyes and testified that I knew that it would happen, I even promised him. Man the spirit was there. I loved it. Well here are some scriptures for the week: D&C98:23-48 (forgive everyone); D&C64:7-11. Well I wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Elder Montgomery has been out for 94 days!!!

Hey Family,
To answer your question Mom no I haven't gotten the package yet but I am learning to be patient.  That was the Christ like attribute I worked on this week, and I am getting better at it. Please send me a jump rope I am starting to get fat and I need something to help me out with cardio because I really can’t go running. Please put in there a roll of clear packing tape… oh and my retainer has a crack in it but I still use it, but I don’t know how long it will last… also a pack of deodorant from Costco just to be safe.
About my week, it’s been pretty good!  I finished the book "Our Search for Happiness" and I’m working on a book called "Our Heritage", it’s another book in the missionary library. I am learning to love to read!  Because we have a lot of down time and extra study time since we have to be in by seven pm since there is no lights at night in our proselyting area and to keep us safe. This past Sunday I had the chance to give a talk in sacrament meeting and I chose to talk about the Atonement… it was awesome!!!  I learned so much about it and when I testified of it, I definitely felt the spirit. The Atonement is the Best thing that has happened to mankind, He is the only one that through Him we can be saved and be cleansed from our sin. I testify that the Atonement works and that it is REAL. But it’s up to us to apply it to our lives.
As far as our teaching its going pretty good we do some good contacting so that when someone doesn't want to study with us or is busy we have people to teach. There are two college students that we teach and I love teaching them because I can speak my regular English instead of kuloqua (broken Liberian English) and they have great question, we just got to get them to come to church…no we haven’t had a baptism since the last one I told you about because Elder Zolo and I took a step back and said that we wanted to make sure that these people are truly becoming converted instead of teaching everything and baptizing and then them never coming to church. Becoming a member of His church is not something to take lightly, because it en-tales making a promise with our Father in Heaven that will that’s FOREVER. I love my companion, the work is going great and all is well… how is everyone back home you got to keep me updated about Marci and Maddy because she doesn’t email me anymore. ..We’ll here is a list of scriptures that I think are awesome share them with the girls please, Alma 7:23; Mosiah 3:12,17; Alma 5:31-38... Those are some good ones that I found and that I liked…. well mom I love you and miss you very much I’m excited for you to go to Oklahoma for a week tell everyone there hello and email me pictures of you with the grandparents while you are there… have an awesome week beautiful!!!!

Elder Montgomery

Hello to all,
This week was a good one! In the beginning of the week we had zone conference which was awesome! Then Tuesday was P-day and we went to the beach to play some soccer, it was really fun! About sending pictures I didn't want to take to much time because I already emailed once before and were only supposed to email for one hour haha. But I will try... on Wednesday I went on exchanges with the zone leaders and the zone leader told me that the purpose of the exchange was to see if I was ready to train. I only have 3 weeks left of my own training and then I might train. He said that he thinks I will be.  I had a great time teaching with him, so we will see. We have 13 new missionaries coming next transfer. It was funny but mean, but during the exchange when people would ask for me in my area the zone leader told them that I died in a moto bike accident, one person actually started to cry a little bit, at least I know I'm loved here haha.  Thursday and Friday we just taught lessons, and then Saturday was the baptism. it was a good one I baptized three people one of them being Sis.Clark.  Sadly one of our investigators that was going to be baptized wasn't because her sister was in the hospital, so hopefully we can make that happen next week, and Sunday was exciting because we had an investigator that came to church for the first time after us teaching him everything and him not coming, so that was exciting. I really miss church back home I'm not going to lie, its easier to feel the spirit back home, here its so distracting during the meeting with the way the building is and what not, but we still have good meetings. I still have a deep love for my mission! Elder Burr and I were talking about how fast its going to go by :(. But all is well.  Well I love you mom and I know that this church is true. I've said a couple of times in some lessons that if someone were to ever hold a gun to my face and told me to deny my message about the gospel and to deny my testimony or they would kill me,  I would tell them no and to kill me! I will stand by my testimony till the day that I die. I can never deny this gospel I know that it is the reason that I have gotten this far in life. I can testify that it is true. I love you all and miss you too.
Love,
Elder Montgomery

Missionaries in Ghana getting ready for some fun

Hey mom,
Today we went to the temple. It was amazing, that temple is so beautiful. It was awesome to see the elders that have never gotten to go through for the first time. I actually got to help another member with some of it. The mtc has been awesome!!! I am slowly adjusting to the hummitity. I don't even sleep with a top sheet on me at night just the sheet underneath me. The food is different, for two of the meals we had tuna with our rice I tried a little the first time but at dinner that night I gave my piece of fish to my companion, he's from Sierra Leone so he loves fish, he is also 24,  we are doing good together. I did get everyones emails, tell everyone that I say hi and that I love them. I honsetly don't know if ill get to email in Sierra Leone but I hope I will!!! cuz its easier than writing letters. I attached some pictures of the temple and my companion. I cannot wait to go out in the field and start teaching!!!  The Gospel is true and the Atonement is real, I know because I have seen it work in my life. Tell everyone that our Father in Heaven loves them very much and he wants them to return to live with him. I know that to be true and I can testify of that love!!!
